School Safety Center

The South Dakota School Safety Center, under the direction of the Department of Public Safety, Office of Homeland Security, was created to promote a safe learning environment for South Dakota Schools. The Center serves as the core for information, training, technical support, and resources on school safety for school faculty and staff, students, parents/guardians, law enforcement, and mental health professionals.

The South Dakota School Safety Center will apply a holistic approach to school safety, utilizing partnerships with educators, administrators, counselors, mental health professionals, and law enforcement. The Center will provide South Dakota K-12 schools with school assessments, trainings, best practices models, guidance, and technical assistance to all those who work with children.

A Message from the South Dakota State School Safety Program Director

The South Dakota School Safety Center is committed to providing resources, training, information, and research regarding school safety best practices. Our goal is to ensure that schools are centers for learning and growth, not fear and uncertainty. By creating a multi-disciplinary, holistic approach to school safety, we pull together the best resources and personnel from education/administration, mental health/counseling, and law enforcement/public safety. The collaborative efforts we employ will help encourage and empower our primary stakeholders-South Dakota students.

Our goal is to provide leadership and support so that you find the South Dakota School Safety Center informative and helpful, and you take advantage of the vast number of resources available to maintain a safe learning environment for our children.
